Collision closes northbound lanes of turnpike; one injured as reported by The Associated Press

June 19, 2014

Troopers say a car slammed into the rear of a dump truck just beyond Augusta's third exit.

AUGUSTA - One person was seriously injured when a vehicle slammed into the rear of a dump truck Wednesday on Interstate 95 in Augusta.

A major traffic backup in the northbound lanes in Augusta will likely continue for much of the afternoon, according to a spokesman for the Maine Public Safety Department.

Maine State Police say the breakdown lane at the crash site is now open, but traffic is moving at a crawl.

A Lifeflight helicopter was dispatched to fly the injured person to the hospital.

Troopers say the car slammed into the rear of the truck, which was slowed in traffic, at mile marker 113, just beyond Augusta's third exit. Northbound traffic is advised to take exits 109 or 112 to avoid the crash site.

Earlier Thursday, the Maine Turnpike Authority had issued an alert cautioning motorists to expect delays between Exit 103 in West Gardiner and the end of the turnpike in Augusta because of road work.
